Welcome to all
Minutes from November were posted on the PAC website. A motion to approve the minutes was approved,
Treasurer – We received the operating grant from SD41 for $330 and our BCCPAC membership has been renewed at a cost of $75 paid from our general account. To date we’ve spent $5,086 towards the school wish list and $1,900 towards school clubs from the gaming grant.
Student Council – Jeffrey – Snow Days which had a pj day, pancake breakfast and food drive and Santa’s workshop events held in December for students. Students could earn Santa bucks which were then used to enter raffles for some great prizes.
School Dance was postponed due to the bad weather in December. The dance will now be held on Thursday January 19th from 6pm to 8:30 pm. All tickets purchased earlier can be exchanged for a new ticket at no additional cost.
Coming up: Love Week in February – various Valentines Day themed events will be held.
Student club requests – No new requests received this month.
Grad committee – Purdy’s, Poinsettias, Canucks Tickets and Water Bottles all sold in December. There are still 19 Canucks tickets left on school cash online and water bottles are also still available. The school website has a link to purchase the water bottles still available.
Jannika Nyberg (YELL) & Sherrie Martens (Applied Skills Teacher) – Presentation on Young Entrepreneur Leadership Launchpad. This program for grade 11 and 12 students and helps them gain knowledge and leadership experience in entrepreneurship. Community mentors are brought in to speak with students about their experiencesas well as field trips to various local businesses. Students are taught how o be flexible to meet the needs of customers as well as how to build a business model and plan.
Students in the school store learn many aspects of running a business such as ordering supplies, dealing with customers, invoices, inventory and how to market products.
Burnaby Mountain is 1 of the 2 schools in Burnaby which was invited to take part in this program. For those interested in registering, students can speak to Ms. Martens at the school.
DPAC – Russell Horswill, the district secretary treasurer will be updating the dpac about the recent court decision which will return a number of FTE teachers to the district.
January 25, 2017 at Maywood Elementary there will be a presentation on Elementary Aged School Online Safety – see Burnaby DPAC website for information and registration details.
Parent Education – April 25, 2017 – Dr. Voh, Pediatrician from BC Childrens Hospital and clinical assistant professor at UBC will be speaking on Mindfulness in Teens at Burnaby Mountain Secondary. Registration is open on Eventbrite.
November – a special tea was held with local seniors in honour of Remembrance Day
Literacy week was held with many fun events and a Scrabble Tournament.
November 17th we had Culture Fest. Lots of good food and entertainment from around the world.
Dec 5-9 – Hour of Code. Kids were introduced to coding through various exercises and games.
Dec 6 – Winter Festival – Choir and Band performance was held at Michael J. Fox theatre very well attended.
Honour Roll certificates were handed out.
Mountain Madness was held where all students participate in a variety of fitness challenges.
Driveway traffic has improved slightly for peak drop off and pick up times.
Dec 12 – Chamber choir gave a very nice performance at the Board Meeting
Jan 18 – Advance Placement program meeting at 6pm for parents interested in learning about AP programs at the school.
Jan 23-27 Exam Week at Alpha Secondary for those students needing to re-write an exam
New Int’l Students are arriving, Hold & Secure Drill to be held, BMSS Sing Thing all coming.
Feb 1 – Reach Out Psycosis Assembly for Grade 10 students
Feb 2 – Course Selection Open House – there will be a new format this year where teachers will be available in the classrooms do discuss their program rather than everyone in the gym.
