BMSS GENERAL PAC MEETING MINUTES Feb 2, 2014
1. Welcome & Correspondence
a. Alana opened the meeting at 7:20pm and welcomed everyone.
2. Minutes of June 2013 PAC Meeting
a. Motion to accept January 2014 minutes with the correction noted in (b) made by Ann Millard, seconded by Anna Gomez. All in favour. Motion passed
b. Correction required: #8 . In attendance at the SPC meeting of December 3rd was Ms de Melo (teacher), Ms. O’Reilly (teacher), Vicki (parent), Patti (parent), Lily (student), Kevin (student), Mr. Chin (principal).
3. Treasurers report
a. Main account; $7214
b. Gaming Account: $26,148
c. Motion to accept budget made by Carol Ohno, seconded by Vicki Dorval. All in favour, no opposed. Motion carried.
4. Old-New Business
a. Student council update – Kiernen
i. Grad week the last week of January. Activities included bowling, pancake breakfast.
ii. Mean Girls production on Feb 11 during the day and Feb 14 in the evening
iii. Dancing with the Teacher happening on Feb 14
iv. Planning for talent show on March 13. Theme is “Mountain Night Live” (like SNL). Cost will be $7 for adults, $5 for students, and free for kids 5 and under.
v. Legacy student art work graffiti may ask for funding.
b. Senior Leadership – Jackie
i. Grad lunch planned for Feb 28
ii. They are asking for $250.
iii. They have been advised to talk with the sponsorship teacher and submit the proper paperwork
c. Healthy School Activities
i. Due to low attendance at the meeting, Ms de Melo has agreed to reschedule to the April 7th meeting.
d. Dry Grad 2014
i. Pub night raised $3200
ii. Committee putting together a raffle and would like to apply for the gaming licence under the PAC umbrella. Motion put forward by Alana Park, seconded by Diane McDonald. All in favour. Motion passed. Tickets will be sold between Feb 19 to Apr 1 or 2. The draw will take place at the Apr 7 PAC meeting.
e. Cobs Bakery
i. Vicki explained how the donations work from Cobs.
ii. Eight parent volunteers required. Vicki will send out a request.
iii. Vicki and Giovanna have worked very hard on this. Thanks ladies.
5. Committee Reports
i. The District is working on a 3 year calendar trying to align our 2 week spring break with most others in the district. A survey will be sent out regarding the 2 week Spring break.
ii. District working on Digital Literacy & Citizenship program for kids from K-12. Working toward having Office 365 available to students where they can work on projects together over the internet.
iii. Dropping letter grades is being looked at by the Ministry but nothing occurring at the district level. Would have to work with post secondary schools to come up with a way for them to determine which students would get into their program.
iv. Movie license has changed. It’s free for classroom use but not for PACs as fundraiser
v. Upcoming events
1. Feb 5: deadline to order Vancouver Giants tickets at $16 for the Feb 16 game. Contact Stoney Creek community office.
2. Feb 11: Balancing our Minds, Tools for Youth Wellness at Rogers Arena 8am to 3pm (partnered with Vancouver Canucks). Free workshop for 13-18 year old youth, teachers, and parents re: breaking down barriers and making connections with regard to mention health.
3. Feb 11: Anti bullying at Lochdale Elementary
4. Feb 11 & Feb 13: McGill Library – topic is dyslexia
5. Feb 18: anti bullying at Gilmore
6. Feb 20: Social Media presentation at Forest Grove – limited to 30 people
b. SPC: Mr Chin will advise when the next meeting will be held
c. Parent Ed
i. Jesse Miller March 4. Thank you to Vicki and Giovanna for all their hard work in putting this together and getting funding from the District.
ii. Request to have someone speak on the Ace-it program. Mr. Chin will arrange this for the March meeting.
iii. Mr Chin will invite Alisa Farina YES worker to speak at the May PAC meeting.
6. Principal’s Report
a. School has new email program called Outlook. Some growing pains. If you haven’t heard back from teachers, this could be why. Listserv is down and there are internet issues.
b. English 10 mock Provincial allows students to learn what writing an exam is like
c. Provincial exam dates may be changed. Unknown at this time what that will look like. Last day of school may be extended.
d. Earthquake drill on Jan 31. No evacuation. Refresher. Kids did great.
e. Course selection will be held on Feb 6 at 6:30 for Grade 7 students and parents and at 7:15 for Grade 8-11 students and parents.
f. New YES (youth engage support) worker at BMSS. Her name is Alisa Farina and she comes from Cariboo. There are 4 in the district.
g. Vaccines for Grade 9 students are on Feb 17.
h. Mr. Wozney will host Talk Time on Feb 27 at 1pm. Discussion will be around marks, grading.
i. Award Event evening is June 5th at the school. All academic and sports awards.
